Peanut Man Crate Monster
This is Brother Lucian's version of a simple pop-up crate monster; only this one pops out more than up.  It is a pneumatic prop and will require air to work. If you do not have experience working with air compressors, please click here for an excellent tutorial from Doug Ferguson at Phantasmechanics. Air compressors can be dangerous and if not used properly can have disasterous results. PLEASE! Be very careful when using air-fired props.

Okay. . . I named him "Peanut Man" because the skin of the mask we used for the prop reminds me of a peanut.
Brother Lucian's mind is always in "haunt mode" so when he saw these storage crates for sale at a local craft store it sparked the creativity that produced the Peanut Man Crate Monster. The crates sell for $5 - $10 each depending on the size you want. He fastened a few of them together to make a larger crate that houses the pop-out. As you can see, some of the crates are really empty and just there for show.
He used two screen door cylinders to build the prop: one that opens the crate lid, and the other to pop out the head. The head is a light, styrofoam wig head from Sally's Beauty Supply with a full head-cover mask over it. It is connected to the crate with a heavy-duty door hinge. Hence the popping out rather than up. You must be very careful when regulating the air flow to the cylinders or the whole thing can act pretty violent when the crate lid opens up and the head flys out - not good.
The prop is hooked up to a timer we purchased from
Haunt Master Products, Inc. There is an adequate delay from the time the prop is triggered to when it actually pops.
The crates were decorated with black plastic chain.
Its a very innovative take on a pop-up and works really well.
