Tree Spirit
It is your basic Douglas Fir Tree make-over. The Tree Spirit is mounted in the crotch of my huge Maple tree in the front yard where he will speak to visitors warning them of the evil that lurks about. We started with a mask Brother Lucien spotted at Spencer's. Its a tree face with a large, crooked branch-type nose and ears and sharp, evil teeth. It looks awesome when the Douggie is plugged in and the eyes light up green.
I stripped the Dougie clean, but left the base intact. Since it will be placed in position on a crook of the real tree between the limbs, the base adds stability and will help balance the head. Since this Douggie has an external jack, it won't be complicated to hook it up to the tape player. The next step was to use a foam wig head purchased at the local Sally's Beauty Suppy to support the Douggie eyes and mask. I hollowed out the foam head and carefully placed the Douggie inners inside.

The trickie part was to get the mask situated over the Douggie so that the eyes could open and the mouth could work. Since the mask already had a movable jaw, it wasn't too much trouble to cut it to fit. I used wire ties behind the cheeks to hold the pieces together and made some adjustments with coathanger wire in the temple areas and more foam on top of the head to position it correctly. It works really well.
I used some wire form (like tight chicken wire) for the neck and draped it aroung the dougiie base. It was covered with black material which at night, blended in very well with the real tree. I used a voice changer and recorded a 30 second loop tape message. The Dads liked him a lot.
